An eye examination is carried out by an optometrist and usually takes about 20-30 minutes. Sometimes it can take longer if you need extra tests, but this is to make sure you can see as well as possible. As well as testing your sight, the optometrist will check the health of your eyes and look for signs of general health problems. We believe that focus on patient care is the difference we provide, offering individualized services to fit each unique eye care need. We not only perform an exam, we let you know what we're doing and why it's important for your eye care.
Several factors may determine how frequently you need an eye exam, including your age, health and risk of developing eye problems. General guidelines are as follows:
School-age children and adolescents.
Have your child's vision checked before he or she enters first grade. OHIP covers one eye exam per year for children up to the age of 20, therefore it's important to have your children's eyes checked every year.
Adults
In general, it is important to have your eyes checked every 2 years. Most vision plans cover an eye exam by an Optometrist every 2 years, or more often depending on your doctor's advice.
Seniors
OHIP covers an eye exam once a year for patients 65 and over.
